The Network of Public Universities in Iceland

This website is dedicated to the Network of Public Universities in Iceland that was established in August 2010 following a policy document published by the Ministry for Education and Culture.

The objectives of the Network project are to strengthen and promote the higher education system in Iceland, to achieve more efficienct use of resources in university operations and to ensure strong and varied higher education operations throughout the country.

Parties to the network are: The University of Iceland, the University of Akureyri, the Agricultural University of Iceland and Hólar University College.

The establishment of the Network is a two-year process managed by a special Project Board, where the four Rectors each have a seat.

The project is now well under way.

The picture shows the four rectors, Stefán B. Stefánsson of the University of Akureyri, Kristín Ingólfsdóttir of the University of Iceland, Skúli Skúlason of Hólar University College and Ágúst Sigurðsson of the Agricultural University of Iceland.

On May 10th 2011, the four rectors signed a contract outlining a framework for joint support services, including two appendices on joint services in academic evaluation and IT development, respectively. Steering groups have been put in place to support the implementation of this contract, and to develop other collaborative efforts.

On December 5th 2011 an agreement on reciprocal access of students to study modules was signed by the four Rectors. The agreement is intended to support increased cross-registration by students, to increase choice by students and to enable more economical provision of teaching by the four institutions. Also, on December 5th 2011, the Project Board approved nearly 30 million ISK in development grants to academic groups planning to develop collaborative projects in course offerings, study programs and joint degrees.
